Use Our Stuff To Build Your Stuff

Ideas

News Photo Networking

This idea mixes in a little Flickr and del.icio.us functionality.

News images within a series of stories are related. Either the images were taken by a single photographer over the course of several days, or several different photographers take images of a single event. This idea is about the viewpoint of image takers and how the user/reader decides to classify images.

Searches can be made for keywords and a Google Images style result is shown. The enhancement highlights images that are related by topic, photographer, place, or time period.

Rolling over an image gives you information about the image. One bit of info may be how many stories use the image. Another bit of info would be the photographer or region the image was taken in. Users can save images that they like in a profile. They can also help others find images by leaving descriptive key words.

Comments would work too.

I think this is a very good idea. I have an idea how to achieve it already, and in practise it's very simple to do.

Will probably involve scanning the feeds every hour or so, getting new stories, detecting images, saving the images into a db and some text from the story as well to make the database searchable.

I'd love to spend all weekend on this, but unfortunately GCSEs are just around the corner. Perhaps saved 'til after :)
