backstage.bbc.co.uk launches

We’re delighted to announce the launch of backstage.bbc.co.uk's public beta. This is a brave new world for the BBC, so bear with us we strive to improve what we have to offer over the coming weeks and months.

Here at backstage.bbc.co.uk we're passionate about giving designers and developers the content and services they need to create cool new things – if you’re one of them, why not join us?

It’s taken several manic months to bring you backstage.bbc.co.uk. In many ways its a brave thing for the BBC to be doing – with our editorial values, our size, our historical legacy and our status as a trusted brand on the Internet – we hope those who've been pushing for this approach for years can understand why we had been cautious in letting go of control of so much of our content.

backstage.bbc.co.uk is run by people just like you. I’m Ben, a software engineer and website developer. I've worked on the BBC News and BBC Sport websites for the last 5 years. My colleague James has been supporting innovation across the BBC’s new media departments for the last 3 years. Together, we’ll be running backstage.bbc.co.uk and promoting it across the Internet. We’ll also be the advocates for your ideas and prototypes inside the BBC, ensuring that your ideas & prototypes are seen by the BBC’s key people.

On the email discussion list you'll find many of my technical and design colleagues from across the BBC’s new media departments. Why not sign up and be a part of our exciting designer/developer community?

It may be cliché, but “this really is your site so please let us know what you want to see. Feel free to send us feedback, comments and criticism.

Congratulations! Proves if you poke Auntie long enough, she'll breakdance. Or something.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in realising this truly innovative service. I’m actually proud to pay the licence! And many thanks for not restricting use to the UK.

Great idea! Congrats for the new adventure.

Should be an interesting venture, I personally can't wait to get my grubby mitts onto the the APIs.

Well done, this could make my summer very interesting.

Congratulations on having the best-designed site in the whole bbc.co.uk domain : )

Congrats on taking this step and leading the way.

I'm stunned and amazed - continually - at how much the BBC *gets it*! This is truly forward-thinking, true to your mission and your survival. Bravo.

Great!

As other people have said above, the BBC is amazing. I don't think I could put it better than Chuck Olsen. The BBC are genuinely at the forefront of broadcasting. I too look forward to seeing what comes of this!

Brilliant, it seems everyone else has hit the nail on the head, I can't wait to see the other feeds pop up, and start being able to imlpement them!

I'm especially interested in regional news and weather (for London) feeds. TV listings for BBC2 would be nice as well.

This is a brilliant move. Just need to settle on an idea to use these feeds for..

Great stuff! I look forward to seeing what you've got lined up for us.

Keep up the great work.

Congratulations and thanks from over-pond! The UK-Euro perspective is hardly reported in the U.S., and it's part of the reason we're the most ignorant voters in the so-far free world. Feed it to us. Some of us will use it to save the world -- if we still can.

The BBC once again proves it is one of the very few companies around that actually understands the people it serves.
