Map of the News

A map of the news. Well that was the plan but it's not as easy as I'd have hoped to work out where a news item comes from.

The system grabs the local feeds and tries to work out where the story came from. It does this by checking for nouns in the description tag of the RSS and scanning its database of places (that map to longitude and latitude).

Uses myGmaps (which uses Google Maps) to draw the news onto the map.
Note, it tends to fail miserably at working out where a news item is from, done as a proof of concept.

An updated version is at:
http://boneill.ninjagrapefruit.com/wp-content/bbc/newmaps/

Although the code that tries to work out where the article is from has not changed there are some edits.

i) The site is now automatically updated with news every 30 minutes.

ii) The older the news item, the more transparent the marker.

ermm... am i the only one whose browser crashes trying to load this?

Interesting idea, seems to work nicely when it gets the location right!

The IE browser crash bug has been fixed, it's a problem with IE not understanding PNGs correctly.

The site now notices IE users and doesn't send them PNGs that IE can't understand (this is fixed in IE7!)

This has now moved to:
