Sport Mapping

This prototype allows a user to centre the map on their home town, or anywhere else in the UK, and find out which local team and which premier league team is closest.

BBC feeds for both teams will then be shown (unless a premiership club is closest, in which case only the one team is shown).

This prototype only covers football clubs at the moment, but could be expanded to cover cricket etc.

With more time/money I would streamline the code, to enable checking of county, either through matching with borders, or a large list of closest towns and their counties, in order to get local county news accurately in a similar way to the clubs.

Again, this is not targeted solely at providing a sport release, but at showing what is possible to stimulate more ideas!

I had a very similar idea for Appeals that I wrote up on by weblog at the URL above.

Nice idea. It would be nice if it included cricket clubs too - I'm in Whitstable. Nearest Premiership side is 43 miles away (Charlton Athletic), nearest Cricket Club is 7 miles away (Kent at Canterbury) and nearest semi pro footie team is Southend, 20 miles away (as the crow flies - the usual problem with GIS: you ask a GIS where your nearest X is, and if it's not in East Kent, then it's in Essex, despite having to drive through West Kent and London to get there!)

This a GREAT use of data and available systems. I love it.

how about assigning different keys for Local News, Sport, Weather, Traffic , Photos, etc, etc, etc.. as well as all sports?

;)

I can do cricket fairly easily, the pain is finding exact coordinates for each club, which I have been doing manually with mappoint.

I know the problem with the distance when there is a channel in the way... i.e. bristol chan/thames etc. Not much I can do about that easily though. (Besides if they build a bridge from Canvey to Cliffe) shouldn't be so far ;)

With regard to the crimewatch appeals, I would happily plot them on the map, if there was a central data set. (Preferably with long/lat, but even a standard rss should be fairly easy if they were to give a good location (junc of road x and road y or whatever)). This centralised data doesnt seem to exist at the moment though.
