gTraffic.info

I built this site as an experiment is using Google Maps and XMLHttpRequest. It provides maps of traffic, public transport events and London cctv feeds. The data is updated hourly. I would like to fix some of it's shortcomings. My programming skills are stong but my html and design skill are a little basic.

This is the first site I've uttered "wow" in awe at since I first saw the original Google Maps. This is brilliant! I have strong HTML and design skills if you need some help...

Thats great , the cctv camera map in london is great , i can finally spy on my
friends who are daft enough to still live in london.

One small note , on firefox 1.0 (fedora core 2) the map image is right against
the edge of the window , a small 5px margin would make this much nicer .
I'm at 1400x1050 resolution.

Hi Alistair, and congratulations.

This is a brilliant example of what I believe this site is here to achieve.

Not only is it a good example but it is something I will bookmark and actually use. Particularly the CCTV where I can check regular traffic hotspots.

I'd be really interested (as would others I'm sure) in reading any documentation you have or might consider writing in the future as to the technologies used, problems faced, data sources etc. (I've just spotted the NetThreads.co.uk as I type)

Unfortuately I am a Mac users and HttpRequest doesn't really work in Safari (No Ajax for me ;-( ) but I can use it fine in Firefox.

Excellent work once again.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. I'd better point out that Rhys Jones was the first to plot the cctv cameras at:

http://backstage.bbc.co.uk/prototypes/archives/2005/05/map_of_bbc_lond.html

I used his lats and longs. The icon is a generic google one. There are lots of cameras that the bbc feeds but no geographical info associated with them (unless I am missing something). Any chance BBC??

You can follow improvements to gtaffic.info and make suggestions at

www.netthreads.co.uk

I put a link to this on the bottom of the main page but not everybody might have noticed it.

Thanks again.

Al.

Hey

Absolutely F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C

I can't fault your design, it's practical & does the job.

Ok so there's a lil needs doing to tidy up some of the graphical bits - but amazing idea - and great execution

I have 5years web design experience, 2 of which in the industry. If you need any pointer, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Well Done you!

Richard ;)
